My advice, based on no personal experience as a parent whatsoever, is to be open with your children about your family’s finances, with the understanding that it is confidential information. Growing up, I knew what my parents made and how much their mortgage was. Kids can handle that. And, I knew better than to ask for Guess jeans for Christmas. And I’ll tell you, I have never carried a balance on my credit card. :)
