Had to walk away from the kitchen for a sec. I think it’s been at least a week and a half since I’ve put on my funny cap and hung a stubby smoke out of the coner of my mouth and done the short-order thing with the kids. Funny how nerve-wracking it is when you’re not used to it. (Note to Gil: you ROCK. I don’t know how you stay off the booze.)
Further evidence of cowardice: I know for a fact that as I am typing this that the two younger ones are pooling resources (Dylan’s topographical knowledge and Daphne’s smaller hands) to break into the candy drawer. I hear plastic rustling and furtive whispering, but it fades if I turn up the radio…
Earlier…
Logan: [looking skeptically at the eggs I have just placed in front of him] “May I have some cereal?”
This is the rule in our house: you can eat what everyone else is having, or you can eat cereal. It’s just particularly irritating at breakfast because it gives the appearance of having catered to a picky eater.
Me: ”Sure, what kind would you like?”
Logan: ”Um, just Life and Charms.’
Me: [opens cupboard, pulls Golden Grahams out and places on counter to get to other boxes, and reaches for Life]
Logan: [immediately and pointedly] ”Mom, that doesn’t look quite like Life.”
Later…
Logan: ”Daphne, that’s too sharp for you to play with.”
Me: [ears perk up]
Me: [whirling] “What’s too sharp for Daphne?”
Logan: ”This." [pulls hand from beneath table to reveal 10-inch tent stake]
Me: ”Guess what? It’s too sharp for you too, Bucko. Let’s have it.”
Logan: ”No. Daddy said I could have it.”
Me: ”You know that Daddy and I don’t agree on that. Please give it to me until he and I have a chance to chat.”
Logan: ”But Daddy said I could have it if Daphne’s not around.”
Me: ”Who’s that sitting right next to you?” [continues to hold out hand]
Logan: ”If Daddy says it’s OK, I’m doing it.” [defiant stare]
Me: [Look of Death]
Logan: [smaller voice] “I won’t touch it. I’ll just tuck it in next to my sword.” [tucks said tent stake into superhero cummerbund tied over currently everpresent Spiderman costume]
