So. My parents. Not much for the simple life. Mom has worked at a university in the midwest for like twenty years, and has FINALLY just this month resigned her position to live in her primary residence three miles away from me in California. Yes, you heard right. She commutes from California to Indiana for her day job. Don’t even ask.
Well. The other day, she and my step dad emptied her apartment, packed up her car and started the long drive home. Through Nebraska. And Colorado. I think they’d have made better time going through Mexico.
I’m not worried much, oh no; hearing that they were trapped in an ice storm in western Nebraska and holed up in one of the last hotel rooms for a hundred miles didn’t spike my blood pressure at all. They spent at least 36 hours there, and were planning to leave at dawn this morning to make the pass through the Rockies. Anyone hear what’s been going ON in the Rockies? I swear this is going to take five years off my life.
I’ve got a mental pool going on to see when they get here. I already know they won’t be here in time to have the house open for the cleaning service tomorrow morning, or to strip the beds and get rooms ready for guests on Christmas Eve. That’s in my court now. But what about the huge family celebration dinner on Christmas Eve?? There are people coming from Tokyo, Long Beach, Santa Cruz, and Sacramento, but we don’t know about the ones throwing the party. I was keeping it fairly calm on the phone yesterday.
“So what do I do? Order pizzas for twenty?”
“Maybe.”
“Or cook?? Phil’s in New York, I’m not talented enough, and I don’t know when anyone’s coming or what they need! And I’m worried sick about you!”
“Oh, we have a free high-speed connection, cell service, and cable. At least we have a room.”
“Shit.”
“So don’t forget to go over there Saturday morning.”
“Okay.”
“Before eight.”
“Okay.”
“We’ll leave at dawn and try to make the last fourteen hundred miles in two days.”
“Okay.”
“Are you okay?”
“Okay.”
“We’ll see you when we see you.”
“Okay. Drive safe.”
