The80’scalled:theysaidtoknockitoff

My Guy and I are heading to an 80’s party for my friend’s 40th birthday, and I just couldn’t bear to tease my hair and go all Belinda Carlisle, so I followed a friend’s advice and I’m now going as one of the Palmer girls from the video “Addicted to Love.” Guy is wearing an honest-to-god, straight from the source, black satin MTV jacket with the original logo. Its been sitting in my closet for over 25 years, and I JUST KNEW IT WOULD COME IN HANDY SOMEDAY.

I had to walk three blocks to my car after having my makeup done. He said, “If anyone asks you how much, tell them that if they have to ask, they can’t afford you.”

Pictures of the both of us after the jump…

I can’t believe you have had that jacket sitting around for this long! Hilarious. I love the serious, and I do mean serious, lipstick! I hope you have a wonderful night.

What a great look! You really pulled that off. Now I’m wondering if you really were a Palmer girl!

Eeks! Crazy how they can twist the words to say you said something, or something happened that didn’t… Pretty sure if she watched the whole movie she’d be a whole lot more scared than just the drop of blood, lol. I think she needs to include an editor’s note clarifying her statement!!

PS KILLER makeup.

I start to read your blog… and it always kicks me off with some error prompt. Is this because my computer sucks (it only does this on your site) or is it because your site hates me and never wants me to read it again.
I mean, if this is your way of breaking up with me, site, you could have done so in an email, or a text message. I mean, other boyfriends have done that… yes I am still sensitive about it. I am assuming you are a boy, site, and…wait! What if you are a girl? Oh HELL! I just got broke up with via error message prompt by my first gay lover!

Anyway… now that that is over- I was wondering the aforementioned question, because I’d really like to read more than five seconds of your posts.

Oh, that costume is SO beautiful… perfect.  Well, except for the black bra under that jersey dress…. my brother was always perving on the girls in that video because he swore you could see their, well, you know and that they definately weren’t wearing bras.

But we all have to make concessions…...

Wonderful post…

Jasmine - omfg if I hear this one my time I will break down sobbing - there is something wrong with my site that only happens to certain users (like my mom) with certain operating systems or browsers, and I am trying to scrape up the money for an overhaul!!

I’m so sorry - try Firefox!

Just to set the record straight—that MTV jacket sat in MY closet some of those years when Mindy moved on into the 90s and beyond. And btw, who are the Palmer girls, anyway?

Mom - you are so right. Thank you for preserving a bit of pop culture so we could trot it out for an inane purpose decades later!

The Palmer girls were the backup band for Robert Palmer’s music video, “Addicted to Love” and were so popular that they were revived for just about every one of his videos after that, either in different outfits or flashback clip.

As a feminist, I am ashamed. As a party-goer, I was a rock star. Here’s something to distract you: The godfather of your firstborn dressed as Richard Simmons.

I’m in Palo Alto at the Garden Court for the SVMomBlog/Chevy event, will be home soon. My Guy is probably somewhere over Siberia by now.

Everyone needs to rock out a good 80’s party once in a while.  The 80’s for me was great.  Not because I fell into the preppy “me-gen” world but because of the amazing alternative and new wave music.
I saw a cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” on last week’s Criminal Minds and I was immediately taken back to nights chatting with my friends.
One thing that sometimes worries me it that people don’t really listen to music as much anymore.

Thanks for the post.

You didn’t smile, did you?  Palmer girls never smile.  Or speak.

If I may, I would like to thank Mindy’s mom for storing the MTV jacket.  My mother kindly, and perhaps not so joyously, stores “temporarily unwanted” furniture, the LONG line of in between hand-me-downs for my three girls, and various other things that I’m not sure are ready for Goodwill, but can’t bare to part with, yet am unable to store at our house.  Moms do nice things for us Moms, don’t they?

Even with the Take No Prisoners makeup (how did you get your lipstick that even and shiny and perfect, anyway?), you still look nicer than the women in that video.  They gave me nightmares in my formative teenage years.  Perhaps resulting in my ongoing inability to apply lipstick.

This is how much I love you (in a friendly non-creeper sort of way)... that I will push past the frustration and STILL read.  ;)
Thanks for letting me know what it was, though!
