I received a letter today saying that they never received my 2005 tax return. I think that was the last time my ex and I filed jointly. And that he did the actual filing.

Maybe I should check on that.

Been there. Done that. Still not getting a refund. Many years later.

Add to the fun, it’s my CURRENT husband. Makes tax time SO MUCH FUN every year.

Every. freakin’. year.

A happier story for me to think about is the cable bill he “absolutely, positively put in the mail box up by the grocery store! I KNOW I DID!”

Check never cleared.

A year later his dad told me he found our cable bill with a check when he was going through business reports from the previous year. Which could lead you full circle to the exact reasons we are on a first name basis with the folks at the IRS.

Considering they are two years late in finding the error you think they would let it slide. Yeah, I know.....only in a perfect world.

Seriously - go to the Taxpayer Advocate’s office.  Do not pass go.  Make an appointment or call them directly.  Do NOT try to call the number or the person on the letter the IRS sent you.

Trust me on this one, please.

I spent close to a year getting dunning notices from the IRS.  I’d spend 75 minutes on the phone waiting to get through, only to hear that they could indeed see my filing in their computer.  But - oh, NO, I couldn’t clear this up over the phone.  Instead, I had to mail them back a letter (with the special pink cover sheet) that they’d promptly lose.

And then I’d get another dunning notice two months later.

The Taxpayer Advocate office cleared this up in two weeks.  And my agent actually *called me back* to keep me informed of what was going on, no less.

Uh oh… Seriously with this string of luck, you’re due to hit the lotto any day now.

So, we trust one government agency to deliver our tax returns to another government agency? I learned a lesson a while back, get a certified mail return receipt stamped showing proof of delivery to the post office. That way the government can’t screw you over saying that you never mailed your return or that you mailed it late.
