Me, Me, MeHonestly, Harry Potter should come with its own expanding/contracting bag thingy. I’m more than halfway through, I’ll have hours on the plane, but it weighs a metric ton and I’ll probably finish it somwhere over Kansas and then be stuck with it for the next four days.
I’m leaving the house in a semi-tidied manner and taking myself to BlogHer. I’ll see some of you there, and miss those who don’t make it. Phil will join me tomorrow morning, so there may be a re-enactment of the closing hour of the first BlogHer cocktail reception way back in 2005. I’ll be looking for you, Kato.
While I’m away, please consider reading and maybe spreading the word about a family friend’s plight.
Mike Mette is the son of one of our oldest family friends, both Chicago police officers. I used to babysit Mike and his siblings, and I did it for a dollar an hour, too. Over the years, Mike’s father Bob has intervened or investigated on our behalf, sometimes, I’m sure, without our even knowing. Whenever there was need, my uncle called in a favor, and then we knew, for instance, the whereabouts of the man who stalked first my mother, and then me back in 1985. We knew when he was found murdered in Central Park far from our home, and that we could finally relax.
Mike kept watch over our family for many years, and now his son is being sent to prison for five years in a severe ruling on an assault charge.
Mike Mette a Chicago Police Officer was unjustly tried and convicted on an Assault charge in Iowa. The tragic conclusion of that trial resulted in Mike Mette being found guilty and unjustly being sentenced to a five year jail sentence. In the Judge’s written ruling, she states that Mike was not the aggressor in this incident, but is punishing him, because he should have walked away from his attacker, who had struck him three times. We definitely do not support the Judge’s poor decision making skills, but we strongly support our friend Mike Mette and with that, stand firm in our support of the Mette Family as they continue to fight, for Mike’s freedom through an appeal that they have filed.
The family is struggling with the legal bills and fears over what might happen to a police officer in prison over the course of five years. Please consider spreading the word or helping out. Help me with this one opportunity to do something for my guardian angel.

My Gosh. I’ll be thinking of them. I can’t imagine how scary this situation is, and how very wrong.
Have a great time in Chicago!

Hi, Mindy. As the fan who submitted the winning entry of in the contest to name your business, I was delighted to see you across the room at Blogher (at the book seminar) but so sad I could not find you afterward.
It such such a trip to see you in person after reading you for the last few years.
I was glad that your rotten luck did not keep you from coming to Chicago.
Fondly,
Celeste
